Square Feet of Renovations
Mike Daniel Recreation Center
2WR began work on this project by assisting Troup County Parks and Recreation with the development of a concept for a proposed SPLOST package. While schematics were being finished, the Parks and Recreation Department was told they would have to vacate their office in four months. Phasing of the project was suggested since the offices were designed within an existing portion of the building. Using a CM At-Risk approach, work was able to begin quickly and within four months the new offices were occupied.
The Recreation Super Center project involved the renovation of an existing 40,000 square foot Lowe’s building, as well as 35,000 square feet of new construction. 2WR was required to work closely with the Troup County Building Department in order to develop a facade that was in compliance with a new streetscape ordinance. The existing building contains new Parks and Recreation offices, aerobics and meeting facilities, arts and crafts space, locker rooms, concession stand, and two basketball courts. The 35,000 square foot addition contains a natatorium, skate park, and indoor soccer/roller hockey rink.
The overall design aesthetic intent was to acknowledge the industrial history of Lagrange, yet provide a statement that appealed to active lifestyle enthusiasts. Exposed structure and sunshading devices combined with masonry veneers and window systems express the tectonic language of the area.
